The black on the hands and indexes contrast well with the gray color dial, and are also lume covered to glow in the dark - pretty well. They come with a rubber strap or a synthetic fabric material strap also in gray. Aside from the concrete gray look of the watches and the fact that they are part of a limited edition, there isn't much new to tell. There will only be 500 made of each, and I am sure they will demand a bit of a premium over the non limited models. Now for the obligatory Commando movie poster shot to go with the Bell & Ross Commando watches.

What is really nice about this version of the new Formula 1 is the clean but attractive face that is very pleasing to look at and use. See the image of another new for 2009 Tag Heuer Formula 1 watch, the Grande Date Chronograph. This watch just feels so cluttered and contradictory to the point of this timepiece. Sure it looks cool, but I wouldn't want to live with it each day. The Formula 1 Grande Date has a large subsidiary seconds dial with an integrated big date. It is hard to see the big date in the images (how ironic), but it is at the 6 o'clock position. The hands on the face are totally new for the watch line, and I think I like them. The best part of the dial are the raised hour numerals and indexes. They have a rich amount of Superluminova so that they will glow. This of course is on the black faced model. The white faced model is basically all lume, with the numerals and markers being in black.

I have come to admire Panerai for their unexpectedly handsome designs. Though they seem to fly under the radar, these are truly masculine yet beautiful designs that play perfectly upon men's wrists. They are instantly strong and powerful, and represent a brand dedicated to precision and time. The Panerai Luminor with Power Reserve is one such intro model that could definitely work for both dads and grads, lending to a life already filled with aesthetics and adventure.

The best watches to compare this with are the Casio Pathfinder watches (one of which I reviewed recently). The watches both share the desire to go outside and rough it, are products are large high volume companies,as well as offer a bevy of major functions that include:

  • Time with full calendar
  • Compass
  • Altimeter
  • Barometer (with mini-weather station readout)
  • Thermometer
  • Logs for all major functions
  • Stopwatch
  • Timer
  • Alarm
  • Two easy-view timezones

One area that impressed me was the decoration on the movement. You typically don't see this from Japanese brands, but the movement has a fair amount of perlage polish as well as a nicely signed rotor. The polish looks machined as opposed to hand applied (as is done with very high-end European watches). This type of decoration is not at all expected on a watch with a retail price of 0. Orient has some way to go if they want to be serious about decorating their movements, but they off to a good start, and having it makes the ownership experience feel more valuable as I didn't expect it in the first place.

Bernhardt Globemaster GMT Watch Review By aBlogtoRead.com Reader Wrist Time Reviews

You'll notice that the metal bracelet is Sinn's five link steel bracelet that it tends to use on it's higher-end watch models, and the thick leather strap has a nifty looking attached plate with the Sinn logo on it. With a thin bezel, the watch features an internal rotating bezel that is turned via the crown located at the 10 o'clock position. The internal rotating bezel is highly functional and something I have never seen before in this style - with Arabic numeral indictors for each minute. Very precise and a look that I like. You then have the indicators (Arabic for every other number) for the UTC hand as well, that while visible - don't seem to get in the way. Sinn "guarantees" high visibility and the luminant-covered hands contrast well with the galvanized black watch face. The little "Ar" indicator means that the face is filled with argon gas - part of a special system to keep the inside of the watch free from moisture, and running smoothly in almost any climate condition, and under all types of pressure conditions. Further assisting the moisture free zone of the watch is a moisture absorbing capsule in the watch indicated by the other little icon above the "Ar" on the watch dial.

UPDATE: The Ocean is now ready to be ordered! It will arrive in a limited edition of just 80 pieces, with over 2,300 possible combinations of customization. The prices start at about 3,200 euros and go up to 16,700 euros (base) for the platinum model. That's right, a very inexpensive price for a platinum watch. You then can add different bezels, straps, and other components.  The watches will begin to be delivered in the middle of Fall 2009.

He makes an ETA-powered diver (The Corsair), an ETA/UNITAS hand-wound Officer's Watch, an inexpensive Miyota-powered diver (Sea Shark), a mid-sized Explorer II-cum-Railmaster homage (The Binnacle), and the watch I got, the GMT Globemaster.

That's it! Once I get 750 valid confirmed comments, UPDATE: the winner will be chosen at random at the end of this June. Also, for legal reasons, all participants must be in the US (or have a place in the US where the watch can be shipped to). Sorry everyone else! If you don't win, you can still buy the watch, and Gnomon Watches does ship internationally.

The Tourbillon Steampunk Ala Grande really has no dial. Instead the watch has exposed springs and rods meant to remind you of a ship's engine room. This watch is for boating steampunk enthusiasts. Again, think of what the engine room on the titanic must have looked like. You have to admit the look of the face is pretty cool - though it is all for style. The large Roman numeral 12 doesn't really help much to tell the time. While the large hands are coated with Superluminova, you aren't going to be relying on this watch as your trusty timepiece for when you've downed too much Absinthe and are trying to figure out when you need figure out when the sun is coming up.

This is probably the nicest Daniel Roth watch I know of, which is saying a lot since Daniel Roth watches are usually REALLY NICE. No, it isn't the fanciest, or most complex watch - and to a large degree the watch is a total contradiction. For example, the name "Chronosprint" makes you think of measuring quick short times, when in reality, it is just the opposite with this self described chronograph for measuring longer measurements of time (because it does not count the seconds). Only hours and minutes are measures in the subsidiary dial with two hands that replicates the chronograph look of some modern Patek Philippe chronograph watches, along with a few other makes. The dial that looks like a smaller watch face has one hand to measure minutes (60), and another to measure hours (12). Daniel Roth describes this complication as a “simple but effective” feature of the watch. The movement is exclusive to this Endurer Chronosprint, and is the DR 1306 automatic mechanical calibre. Complications include, hour, minute, chronograph (no seconds in the watch), and a big date. Further, the chronograph is operated with just one button that cycles through start, stop, and reset.

The pictured Bremont Supermarine 500 watch uses their modified BE-36A automatic mechanical movement (certified to be a chronometer) - that is itself likely to be a modified ETA 2836 movement with a day and date indicator. Looking at the image of the rear of the watch, you can tell that it is of a chronograph model (due to the pushers). This signifies that pretty soon Bremont will also release a chronograph version of the Supermarine 500 watch. I am pretty sure that this sharp looking timepiece will have lots of iterations released in various colors and complications. The vertically grooved rubber strap is nice enough, but I sense that the watch will be offered on leather and rubber straps in due time. Prices are likely to be in the ,000 - ,000 range.

There are four watches in collection with two dial colors and varying metals. The cases are large at 47mm wide. Each model has a fair amount of titanium and steel, while a few (such as the one pictured) also have rose gold built into the complex case construction (made up of 48 pieces). Each of the watch variations will be limited to just 60 pieces. Inside the watch is the LM05 automatic movement made specially for Louis Moinet. I appreciate that the movement is an automatic, and you can see the nice Cotes de Jura engraving on the movement and integrated into the rotor seamlessly. Looking in the face of the watch you see the guys of the retrograde complication which is mainly a large star gear, and a spring to shoot the hand band into position after each ten circulations of another gear. Despite this, I am not concerned that the movement is "too" complex - which is the case with many such movements and can be prone to damage. I have a hunch that the Tempograph will be relatively hardy.

Lets start with placing this Skagen watch model within the current company line up. This is one of the more basic models, and I chose it for that purpose. Skagen’s core consumers are people interested in nice looking watches to compliment their lifestyle. They use their mobile phone to check the time, as much as they check their wrist. So I wanted to choose basic model to evaluate - given what a lot of people interested in the brand might choose. This model 355XLSSB watch is in Skagen’s Steel Collection. Other major collections are the Titanium and Swiss Movement collection. This makes it almost entry level for the brand.

As for my Rolex Cellini Danaos, purchased in Geneva, I love the Sinatra-style qualities of this model. Classic. Smooth.

The new movement is the FC-700 automatic, and is the accumulation of over three years of development. What surprises me is the look and feel of the movement. The focus on aesthetics in the layout of the elements (such as the placement of the balance wheel) is complimented by a level of decoration not expected at these modest price points. The gold rotor, perlage and other polishing, and use of blue screws makes viewing the movement a pleasure. Nothing makes me feel better than taking off my watch and showing it to a friend (especially those that don't know about watches) - allowing them to discover an impressive mechanical movement visible through a caseback window.

Happy April Fools Day.

Confrérie Horlogère Presents The ImmenSEAty Watch Movement By Gabriel Salgado

"Watchmen" Movie Nods To Mechanical Watches Feature Articles The watch that Jonathan Osterman wears before his transformation is unlabeled and really could be many things - even a Timex. The Timex that gets some nice screen time is a 1980s model from when your standard Timex watch had a bit more style. Actually, Timex has made a comeback in the recent years with some interesting models, but still is the proprietor of some fugly low-end watches in my book. I am going to give fugly a new definition here: functional ugly = fugly. For this article I don't have images of the watches, but I am going to attach an image of another vintage Timex watch that has a similar tapered date window as the one in the movie. I'll attached images if and when I am able to discover some.
