For starters you should know that Eterna makes all the watches for Porsche Design. So it seemed pretty clear that this was a deliberate move, meant to erase the history of the KonTiki Diver! If you compare the two watches, the Porsche Design P'678 Diver is a bit more simple, streamlined, and hopefully a bit less expensive. The KonTiki Diver retailed for bout ,000. Though it had a ton of cool technology. The complex titanium case flipped out of a cage for winding and for a new position on the wrist. It just felt totally space age. Also, you needed to pull out the inner case so as to move the bezel - that while you operated from the outside, turned on the inside. Powering the the 1000 meter KonTiki Diver watch was an automatic ETA 2897 movement with the time, date, and power reserve indicator. It was pretty kick-ass. So what happened? Well apparently Eterna didn't sell a lot of them. According to them, the watch "didn't fit into the brand." Most people don't really know about Eterna, especially in the US. If they do, they likely have some vague concept of the brand's merits, even though it is a great brand. They actually started ETA before selling it to the Swatch Group.

No doubt that preference for the Artya Coprolite is an acquired taste. Not only is the dial material something you need to think kicks ass, but you need to stomach 50mm of it including the case on your wrist. Arpa has a fascination with decay. As such, the steel or bronze case here is done in a fashion that resembles highly weathered metal. When I first looked at the piece it seemed to resemble a watch I had seen elsewhere. When I finally checked out the Coprolite watch I realized that what I was associating the watch with was no mere accident.

Roger Dubuis gave the watch a moronic name. I love the "EasyDiver" part (a la Easy Rider). I kid you not, they actually named it the "EasyDiver Hours, Minutes, and Small Seconds." And people wonder why I make fun of the watch industry. "Check out my cool new car...the Wheels, Engine, and Steering Wheel." Aside from a name you don't want to utter yourself, the entry level EasyDiver is a great timepiece. The cool character is accompanied by a beautiful in-house made automatic movement (more on that in a second), and is also a limited edition. Should totally be part of the brands permanent collection though, in my opinion. Actually all the new EasyDiver watches for 2010 are limited editions... wonder why that is.

Seiko has paired the SNR005 watch a great bracelet. The links are fitted closely together for an almost seamless look, and it fits very tightly with the case. The three link design has the thinner outer links given a polished finish, while the thick inner link has a brushed finish. It makes for a handsome style that feels classy and conservative. I would however had liked the outer polished link to also be polished on the underside of the bracelet - where the bracelet has an all brushed finish. Not sure the reason this is, perhaps there is a good reason that I am not aware of. The most avant garde part of this watch is the case design, so the bracelet like I said, is simple and attractive. The bracelet has a butterfly push-button deployment clasp, that is simple to use. It gives the bracelet a seamless look while on the wrist. I appreciate that Seiko designed the bracelet with "half links." These are links that are smaller than the standard ones so that you can adjust the size of the bracelet a bit more precisely.

STRAP:

Initial impressions aside, it's still a big watch (44mm x 50mm). But with a unique design. I simply love the case shape and the color of it, they call it coffee I would call it brass. Shape of it looks simple at first glance and then you start noticing it's edges, curves and smooth lines. Color is deep and rich, and brings to my mind some vintage water boiler or a distillery. It's still stainless steel (316L) case but with a surface treatment (not sure which technique is used). Case is something that might have been taken from a sci-fi movie and the color has definite steampunk vibe to it. This piece is not only large but also quit tall (12mm) which makes it look like some sort of retro sci-fi wrist communicator ("beam me up Scotty") or a tool Predator could have used. So what's it all about? It's a LED watch with time-date function. Nothing more nothing less. On wrist it's large black crystal keeps it's secrets and when the button is pushed it comes to life, for 3 seconds. Therefore, most of the time the screen is just blank black. The watch is a big, fashionable (debatable) and solid piece of metal. Build quality is surprisingly good for the price point (225£) and the brass colored surface finish is top notch. It has huge black mineral crystal that makes it look just as big as it is.

Black Carbon face, fine polished and satin-finished EB applique marker, shaped and polished applique indexes at 3 o'clock and 6 o'clock, Bugatti "nail" motifs, delta-shaped hands with luminous coating.

Inside of it is a Swiss ETA 2893 automatic GMT movement, that St. Dupont has COSC Chronometer certified. The watch comes on a "soft-touch" leather strap (not sure what soft-touch is, but this isn't a soft looking watch), and will make you sound as though you have more bravado instantly just by wearing it. Price for each of the 500 pieces will be 3,890 euros.

Inside the watch is a Swiss Valjoux 7750 automatic with the dated moved to the lower center of the dial. The steel version has a silvered dial while the rose gold plated version has a "chocolate dial." Each is matched to a portholed leather strap and comes in a cool box with the 'stoptimer.' Not totally sure about price, but it will be in the ,000 - ,000 range. www.frederique-constant.com

These fancy versions of the SpidoLite watches have alligator straps - but done in the special SpidoLite manner with the rectangular "portholes" on the sides. They look pretty darn good with the watches. Linde Werdelin's standard style case not only looks good but is also very comfortable to wear. You can see that the broad case is not very tall, making it very easy to wear. The style is incredibly diverse, which is why the same case has been used on pretty much every Linde Werdelin watch. In addition to looking like something out of a superhero's arsenal, the case is meant to have one of Linde Werdelin's Instruments (the Rock of the Reef) clip on to the top of it. Even though the case on the SpidoLite watches is richly skeletonized, it doesn't really have sharp edges. The two watch models are each limited to 88 pieces. The SpidoLite All Black Titanium DLC is going to be about 9,800 euros and the gold version will be 15,800 euros soon. Glad I got to check these out. If the styles appeal to you, I think you'll like what you find.

You'll notice that Oris has refined the look of the "open date" window. The almost triangle-like shape now integrates the day and date indicators and allows for that "open date" design. Oris watches are often innovators when it comes to continuously polishing existing designs. I appreciate them for that. Reading the watch isn't touch at all. The hands have larger lume covered sections in white that contrast nicely with the dark dial. The blue bordered race-font style hour numerals are easy to spot as well - while there are lots of little lumed sections of the dial.
