Japanese movements are cheaper because of their production philosophy. For the most part, if you compare a mass produced ETA with a Miyota the ETA will have a higher level of performance and more attractive parts. But, of course, be much more expensive. Japanese movements are produced much more efficiently, and some of them actually come very close to Swiss performance, even if they don't look as pretty. Japanese movements are often produced outside of Japan where labor is cheaper, while the "Swiss Made" designation requires a more Swiss labor, and the price thereof. Those are some of the reasons that Japanese movements tend to be cheaper.

How we see time influences how we communicate and perceive time. Time for some people is waiting for hands on a dial to move into position, while for others it is carefully watching seconds precisely count away on a digital display. When I was growing up the terms "analog" and "digital" only had reference to clock and watch faces. It was not until I was a bit older did I realize those words had meaning not related to telling the time.

The Time Pyramid is an exclusive movement produced in-house by Arnold & Son for the watch called the caliber A&S1615. The movement offers an off-center time display, subsidiary seconds display, as well as a unique system for managing torque in the movement. The caliber A&s1615 includes two mainspring barrels. The idea is that one barrel will provide torque to the other barrel during the time when spring power is running out and torque goes down.

I found the hands to be particularly legible and nice to look at. They, and the hour markers, are of course SuperLumiNova lume-coated for darkness viewing. That stick-like seconds hand in red offers a welcome accent of color (save for on the blue models). Aside from wanting the seconds hand to extend a bit more to the edge of the dial, I would say that the dial is very nice for what it is. Note that on the white dialed models, Xetum wisely chose to outline the hour and minute hands in black to promote the best legibility possible.

Innovation Spotlight: Blancpain Under-lug Correctors Hands-On

Wanting the best deal out there is just simple psychology. People that don't price-hunt are bad business people and are fiscally irresponsible. The ability to price-shop with the speed that the Internet allows is incredible. What did we have before that? Calling around? Driving around to other stores close by? Before the Internet, simple logistical impediments made price comparison shopping a pain. It's not like you are going to fly to South America to see if you can get that new flat screen television cheaper over there. And because retailers more or less have the same fixed costs, the consumer could more or less expect the same prices all around town - save for an occasional special sale.

As a sport watch, the Icon Extreme name does technically apply as it has 100 meters of water resistance. The case is certainly beefy and the crystal is sapphire I believe. It might not fit snugly like many dive watches, and I don't know precisely what activity Savoy had in mind when designing it, but I imagine it would survive a day playing craps at a Casino or driving your Cadillac through traffic. Given the style, those are the types of sports that seem to go with the design. The look of the watches is very Las Vegasy. Meaning that they are meant to look classy, but also modern, and additionally unique. Sort of like the Cheesecake Factory. In fact, this color scheme for the Icon Extreme is pretty conservative given the others - which might be worth looking at on their site if you are shopping for a watch to go with your various Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses.

What we are, too, is simple: Mechanics of Style was designed to be one of the world’s leading online men’s-luxury resources — a digital gateway to the good life, sharpening every arrow in the modern gentleman’s quiver: bespoke suits, bench-made shoes, travel, food, libations and much more.
